Strakka Racing will start its home race, the 6 Hours of Silverstone, tomorrow in pole position thanks to what can only be described as a bonzai lap by Danny Watts and some excellent team tactics.
Forecast showers arrived just in time for the start of qualifying. Danny was one of the first cars out of the pits but the team quickly pulled him back in after just one lap, deciding to take a gamble that the rain shower would blow over and that other cars would clear a dry line on the track. It proved to be the right call, as this was exactly what happened and waiting until precisely the right moment, Danny left the pits with only nine minutes of the 20 minute session left to run.
On slicks and with and small window of opportunity, Danny pulled out a lap time of 1:51.827 and pole position with three minutes left to go. Continuing to push all the way to the chequered flag the best was yet to come and with two further flying laps Danny was able to find even more speed in the car, producing a final lap time of 1:49.619, reinforcing pole position by 1.3 seconds!
Danny Watts: "It was a bit of a difficult session because of the weather which made it really hard to know when to go out. I just tried to say cool and not get flustered and put all my trust in the guys on the pitwall and they did a great job. You had to be patient as the circuit conditions were getting better and better. I didn't push too hard to start with as I knew I had to wait for the right time. I knew when the time was right and managed two flying laps right at the end of the session and gave it all I had."
